Ministries - Philoptochos - March 2015

Genie Kontos, President

For over 35 years, our St. Nicholas "Kouzina" (kitchen) has served our community well, including our Annual Valley Greek Festival, family celebrations, fund raising events, coffee hour, various ministry functions, etc. All of which were made possible through this structure.

Our "Kouzina" is in major need of remodeling. It is not only outdated, but many of the appliances are no longer working! Your Philoptochos has taken the initiative by scheduling various events this year to help raise money so that we could start the process to remodel this vital part of our community. If anyone would like to donate to this worthy cause, please send a check to St. Nicholas Philoptochos and make sure to print "Project Kouzina" on the memo line.

On September 20, 2014, we held our Dionysus Festival of Wine which was the kickoff event for "Project Kouzina." Helen Bougioukos, along with her co-chairs Patricia Langermann and Sylvia Manios, did a stellar job arranging a beautiful event. A very special thank you goes out from our community to Ted and Maria Maniatakos, who upon hearing what the event was for, graciously donated $125,000.00 to help begin making Philoptochos' dream a reality! On behalf of the board, I would also like to thank Maureen Boulgarides, Mike and Katina Koulakis, Steve and Linda Manios, St. Nicholas Dance Group, and also other Saint Nicholas parishioners who made generous donations towards the project. Last, but not least, a big thank you to all who attended this worthwhile event. You are all appreciated so very much!

National Philoptochos Sunday: Our community was able to donate $1,000.00 on September 21, 2014. This money went towards the aid of our brothers and sisters in Greece and Cyprus.

October 5, 2014 Go Pink Sunday: Nadia Saroukos, as well as her co-chair Eleni Saroukos, did a beautiful job of educating all of us about breast cancer. Your Philoptochos was able to send a check for $600.00, as a result of generous contributions from the community.

October 12, 2014 Our Membership Luncheon was a beautiful event that everyone looked forward to. Marina Saroukos and her co-chair Maria Spirtos put together a wonderful luncheon. Everyone enjoyed seeing Charlotte McCarty, Nora Iliades, Gail Thomas, and Cindy Alex receive their Past President pins. Effie Brotsis, Mary Lyons-Macris, and Mary Costopoulos did a fantastic job in quickly collecting membership dues as well as educating people about various Philoptochos ministries. Thanks go out to Dara Phillips and Sylvia Manios as well.

November 2, 2014 General Assembly Meeting: Thank you Sylvia Manios for arranging to have a guest speaker from the Los Angeles Youth Network come and enlighten us about this very important ministry. As a result, our Philoptochos chapter gave a donation of $1,000.00. A large thank you goes out to our Dance Group and Sunday School for donating as well. I would also like to mention that during the Annual Golf Tournament, St. Nicholas Church donates a portion of their proceeds to the Los Angeles Youth Network. It has always been my dream for our ministries to work together and when they do, that dream becomes a reality.

On November 16, 2014, your Philoptochos had their 2nd fundraiser for Project Kouzina, "Loucoumathes Sunday." A huge thank you goes out to the Alex Saroukos family for donating all the ingredients and their time for this event. Again, our community stood behind us and we were able to deposit an additional $2,000.00 to our "Project Kouzina" account!

December 14, 2014 was our Christmas Bake Sale. Chairs Litsa Awad and Eugenia Georgilas had their baking team work very hard to provide such delicious goodies for all to enjoy. The majority of the proceeds from this event were donated to our Metropolis of San Francisco for "Kids n' Cancer" charity. The rest was used to fulfill our other obligations.

On January 11, 2015, we celebrated our Annual Celebration of the Vasilopita. This event was made memorable thanks to our chairs Sophia Gavrilis and Maria Janios. We were able to send a check to Saint Basil's Academy for the amount of $3,000.00. Again, without our community supporting Philoptochos, this would not be possible.

Our New Year's Money Raffle was a huge success thanks to the marketing techniques of Tonia Cavelaris and her co-chair Dara Phillips. The three $1,000.00 winners for this year were:

Mrs. Katina Koulakis
Mr. Steven Manios
Mr. Harry Daglas

Catherine Naltsas and her co-chair Dara Phillips had many of us wearing red on February 8, 2015 for "Go Red Sunday." A big thank you goes out to everyone who donated blood as well as those who donated money. As a result of everyone's generosity, a check for the amount of $300.00 was sent to the National Heart Association.
