PHILOPTOCHOS NEWS

January 12, 2014: Celebration of the Vasilopita was beautiful to attend as well as behold. Thank you goes out to Sophia Gavrilis and her co-chair Mary Costopoulos for a memorable event. Your Philoptochos is proud to announce that the amount of $2,000.00 was collected for St. Basil's Academy during that function. We thank everyone for their support towards St. Basil's Academy.

Our annual Money Raffle was also held on the 12th of January. Congratulations to the THREE winners who won $1,000.00 each:

  1. The James Kontos Family
  2. The Michael Morgan Family
  3. The Father Anthony Savas Family

February 9, 2014: Go Red Sunday: What a "heart" warming event, thanks to Catherine Naltsas and her co-chair Patricia Langerman. The ladies collected $300.00 in donations that will be mailed to The Heart Association. The Blood Drive that was taking place was also a success. 21 units of blood was collected. This amount of blood saves up to 63 lives. Thank you to all who donated!

February 18, 2014: Our 4th General Assembly Meeting was held that evening. Philoptochos Announcements were made and the opportunity was given for all to ask any questions one might have regarding Philoptochos. Apologies were made by Marina Saroukos and her co-chair Maria Janios: The Greek Comedy, "I Love Karditsa" could not be shown due to technical difficulties. Nevertheless, everyone had a good time talking amongst each other and enjoying refreshments.

March 16, 2014: Loukoumathes Sunday: Marina Saroukos and her co-chair Nadia Saroukos are ready to satisfy your sweet tooth by preparing loukoumathes. Most of the proceeds from this event are going to one of our new ministries – Mattel Children's Hospital: Chase Child Life Program. This program has been a pioneer and national model for decades. The Chase Child Life Program collaborates with other healthcare team members to help achieve a balance between the medical and psychological needs of the children and their families during the time that they spend in the hospital. Chase Child Life does not charge the families for their services; they rely on people such as us to help. It is up to all of is to help make this worthy event a success! I always say, "Children and hospitals…those two words just don't go together." Your generosity will help ease some of the fear these little one experience during their hospital stay.

March 30, 2014: Effie Brotsis and her co-chair Dara Phillips are busy organizing our Clothes Drive for MEND. MEND (Meet Each Need with Dignity) is the largest poverty agency in the valley. The services they provide safeguards the dignity of all recipients while promoting self-reliance. This is a great opportunity to clean out your closet, knowing that your kindness will assist others by giving them confidence and by letting them know that you care.

March 30, April 6, and April 13: These dates are our Annual Shoes for Orphan Souls Shoe Drive. Please feel free to visit our Philoptochos table, where Chair Catherine Naltsas and her co-chair Dara Phillips will have information for you to receive as well as answers to any questions you may have. Please drop off new shoes, new socks, and new shoelaces at the Philoptochos table on any of the designated dates. If you would prefer to give a cash donation to this ministry, that would be equally appreciated!

Your Philoptochos will provide a delicious Lenten dinner. On this evening, we will be asking everyone to bring a small item from the wish list of UCLA MATTEL Child Life Program. (A flier will be out closer to this event with wish list items). Ms. Stephanie Tallie from Child Life will be attending. She will inform us about the great program. On that evening, we will present her with a check from most of the proceeds we made during Loukoumathes Sunday. Please put this date on your calendar! Don't forget to invite as many of your family members and friends as soon as you can. On this evening, we will also be preparing some Easter goodies for our shut ins as well as our beloved Orthodox seniors in our community centers. If this doesn't put you in the "Easter Spirit", I will be surprised!
